Lee Heffernan is an experienced industrial hygiene and radiation protection professional with over a decade of practical experience managing naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) risks in the oil and gas sector. His experience includes serving as a Radiation Protection Supervisor, developing radiation management procedures covering NORM, sealed sources and radiography, and establishing practical controls for NORM in bp Shipping, including guidance and presentations for LNG vessel operators, overseas shipyards and specialist contractors.

In his current role as Director Industrial Hygiene for bp’s Middle East and Africa region, Lee provides technical leadership, assurance and capability development on radiation protection matters. He acts as a radiation subject matter expert for bp Health, has conducted or arranged radiation surveys at ageing oil and gas facilities in the Middle East and North Africa, has authored bp’s first self verification form on radiation safety.

Lee was accepted as a full member of the UK’s Society for Radiological Protection in September 2026.
